What are Dentures?

Dentures, or false teeth, are designed to replace missing teeth in the mouth. This applies to individuals who are missing a few teeth as well as those who have lost all of their teeth. Dentures look and behave the same way as your natural teeth and have proved to be a popular dental treatment option for missing teeth. Advances in dentistry have made many improvements in dentures such as looking more natural and fitting better. In comparison to other dental treatments, dentures:

• Prevent the sagging of facial muscles
• Enable you to eat and speak normally
• Last from 5-10 years

 Types of Dentures

There are 2 types of dentures – full or complete dentures and partial dentures.

• Full or Complete Dentures – Designed to replace all the missing teeth in both your upper and lower jaw. The conventional type of denture is designed to be worn a month after a full tooth extraction. The other type of full or complete denture is called an immediate denture which can be worn right after a full tooth extraction but will require some adjustments later on.
• Partial Dentures -Partial dentures replace some of the spaces left by a few missing teeth. Partial dentures come in fixed and removable types.

Individuals who have lost most or all of their teeth are a likely candidate for complete dentures. Partial dentures are more suitable for individuals who have some natural teeth remaining.

Denture Durability

Dentures are extremely durable but they are not indestructible. Over time they can bend, chip, break or discolor. But with good care they can last for many years. In most cases dentures last 5-10 years. After 7 years dentures may need to be relined or re-based if they become loose.

Insurance Coverage

A patient who’s dentures are deemed a medical necessity will most likely be covered by their dental insurance, however, many insurances have annual caps, so the entire cost may not be covered.
