When Grafting Is Needed
Why Bone Disappears After a Tooth Goes
Jawbone needs a tooth root to keep it stimulated. Once a tooth is gone, the bone beneath it begins to shrink, and after a year or two there may not be enough left to hold an implant.
Bone is also lost to gum disease, infection, injury, or a developmental defect.
You may need a graft if:
- A tooth has been missing for some time and you now want an implant
- Gum disease has destroyed bone around the remaining teeth
- A tooth is being extracted and you plan to replace it with an implant later
- An implant site has been assessed as too narrow or too shallow
Planning Ahead
Grafting at the Time of Extraction
If you already know you’ll want an implant, the best time to graft is often the day the tooth comes out.
Placing graft material into the socket straight away preserves the shape and volume of the bone, rather than waiting for it to shrink and rebuilding it later. It’s usually simpler, and it means the site is ready when you are.
If you’re having a tooth extracted and haven’t decided about replacement yet, it’s worth asking about this before the appointment.
The Procedure
What Bone Grafting Involves
The graft is done under local anesthetic and takes around one and a half to two hours.
Most commonly we use allograft, which is processed human bone from a tissue bank, or xenograft, which is bovine. Sometimes a small amount of your own bone from elsewhere in the jaw is mixed in. Dr. Mosquera will talk through which suits your case and why.
The material is placed into the site, covered with a membrane to protect it, and stitched closed.
Then it heals. Bone takes four to six months to mature properly, and we’ll check the site before placing an implant to make sure it’s ready. That wait is what makes the implant last.
After the Graft
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery takes a few days. You’ll be given antibiotics, a rinse, and pain medication if needed.
Rest and ice speed things up, and most people take a day or two off work. Stick to soft foods while the site settles.
You’ll get written post-operative instructions and we’ll go through them with you before you leave.

What Does Bone Grafting Cost?
It depends on how large the area is, which graft material is used, and whether a membrane or additional procedures are needed. We’ll give you a written estimate before any work starts.

- The size of the area being grafted
- The graft material used
- Whether it’s done at the time of an extraction or as a separate procedure
- Whether the graft is a straightforward socket fill or a larger reconstruction
Will Insurance Cover It?
Insurance varies more here than with most treatments. Some plans contribute where the graft is preparing a site for a necessary restoration; others treat it as part of the implant and exclude it. We’ll check yours and tell you where you stand before you commit.
