Silver
Amalgam Fillings
Hardwearing and long-established, but visibly grey, and it requires more of the tooth to be removed to hold it. Some patients have older amalgam fillings that are still perfectly sound.
If you have existing silver fillings that are not failing, there is usually no reason to replace them. Replacing a sound filling means removing more tooth. We will tell you when one genuinely needs doing and when it does not.

What Actually Happens
Most fillings take twenty to forty minutes from start to finish.
- Numbing the area first, so you feel pressure rather than pain
- Removing the decay, taking as little healthy tooth as possible
- Cleaning and preparing the cavity
- Placing the composite in layers, each one set with a curing light
- Shaping and polishing it so the bite feels normal
You can eat straight afterward with a composite filling. There is no waiting for it to harden.

A new filling should feel like the tooth did before. If your bite feels high or catches, we adjust it in a couple of minutes. Do not wait for it to settle on its own.

A composite filling typically lasts seven to ten years, sometimes considerably longer. Amalgam often lasts longer still.

Most dental insurance covers fillings, usually at a higher percentage than cosmetic work, because they are treated as necessary. Plans often cover composite on front teeth but only amalgam rates on back teeth, and we will check exactly how yours works.
