Braces or Invisalign for a Teenager?
Braces. Fixed on, working all the time. Nothing to remember, nothing to lose. Handles every kind of movement, including the complicated ones. Elastic bands come in whatever color you want, changed at each visit.
Best if: the case is complex, or you know you’d forget aligners.
Invisalign. Clear removable trays, worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Barely visible. Come out for eating, brushing, and sport.
Best if: the case suits aligners and you’ll genuinely wear them. Teen versions have indicators that show whether they’ve been worn enough, and yes, your orthodontist can tell.
Dr. Sohrabi will say which is realistic. Not every case suits aligners, and it’s better to hear that at the start than six months in.
Day to Day
What Living With Braces Is Actually Like
The first week. Teeth feel tender and it’s hard to bite into things. Soft food and a painkiller if needed. It settles.
After each adjustment. A day or two of pressure, then back to normal. Less than the first week.
Eating. Nothing very hard or very sticky with fixed braces, so no ice, hard sweets, or chewing gum. Cut apples rather than biting them. With aligners you take them out, so nothing is off limits.
Sport. You can play everything. A mouthguard over braces is essential for contact sports, and we’ll fit one. With aligners you take them out.
Instruments. Wind and brass take a few weeks to adjust to with fixed braces. Manageable, but worth mentioning if you play seriously.
Brushing. Takes longer, and it matters more. Food gets caught around brackets, and decay around a bracket leaves a mark on the tooth after the braces come off.
Treatment Length
How Long Does It Take?
Most teenage cases run 12 to 24 months, depending on how much movement is needed. Simple corrections can be under a year.
You’ll get a realistic estimate after the initial scan, not a headline figure. And treatment finishes faster if appointments are kept and, with aligners, if they’re actually worn.
Retainers come afterwards and they’re not optional. Teeth drift back, and the retainer is what stops months of treatment undoing itself.

Will Insurance Cover It?
Most dental plans that include orthodontics cover teenagers, usually as a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one. We’ll check yours.
