Sometimes when you opt for a dental implant procedure, the dentist may have to give you a bone graft surgery before they can proceed with an implant. Icon Dental Center in Everett, and Seattle says there’s really nothing to worry about and it is a routine procedure that is minimally invasive.

The bone graft helps in replacing any missing bone in the jaw so that it can become a firm base for the implants. But like many patients, you may not be aware of what to expect that comes after the procedure. Here are 5 things that usually happen after you go through the treatment.

Some Discomfort and Pain

  • It would not be right to say that dental bone graft surgery is pain-free. According to dentists and other patient data, you can expect a little discomfort. Most patients say that this is a bearable phase and can be compared to the pain you feel after a tooth extraction procedure.

In most cases, dentists will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to help you manage the discomfort and pain that comes immediately after the surgery. You can also apply an ice pack on the affected area to achieve relief.

You May See Swelling

  • After the procedure, you will see swelling in the area. You can get rid of this swelling by applying an ice pack on the affected area with frequent intervals for at least 2-3 days post-surgery.

Icing helps in preventing blood influx that is common after this surgery in the gum tissues. Applying ice accelerates the healing process as well so don’t forget to use plenty of ice.

Temporary Dietary Changes

  • For a few days after the surgery, you may have to do selective eating. What you will be allowed to eat depends a lot on the extent of bone grafting you received. Some patients are advised to only consume fluids such as smoothies, juices, or soups.

If the extent of bone graft is not significant, you will be allowed to eat oatmeal, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, pureed fruit, and pudding. In both cases, you’ll have to completely avoid eating hard, crunchy and sharp food like fried chicken or nuts.

Changes in Sleeping Position

  • Patients who undergo bone graft surgery are advised to sleep on their back with their head elevated on pillows. This helps in blood influx to the side that has been treated. You will be asked to avoid sleeping on the side where the surgery was performed.

You’ll Have to Reduce Physical Activity

  • For a few days after the surgery, you will have to avoid any physical activity that is strenuous in nature. You won’t be able to play sports like football, running, wrestling, boxing, or any other physically demanding sports.

A patient is able to return to their normal routine after a few days of recovery. If you feel that things have not improved for you, your dentist will be able to help you.
