How to Tell If You Have Gum Disease
Gum disease often causes no pain until it’s advanced, which is why it’s so commonly missed. The early signs are easy to dismiss:
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Bad breath that doesn’t go away
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums pulling back so teeth look longer
- Teeth that feel slightly loose
- Discomfort when chewing
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth being seen. Gum disease doesn’t resolve on its own, and treatment gets more involved the longer it’s left.

How We Treat Gum Disease
Which treatment you need depends on how far the disease has progressed. Most people need the first one on this list and nothing more.
- Deep cleaning treats early to moderate gum disease
- Surgery is for pockets too deep for a deep clean to resolve
- Grafting rebuilds gum and bone that has already been lost
- Treatment is done under local anesthetic
- After treatment, most patients move to cleanings every three to four months
Deep Cleaning
Scaling and Root Planing
The most common treatment, and often the only one needed. We clean below the gumline where a normal cleaning can’t reach, then smooth the root surfaces so the gums can reattach. Usually done in sections, with local anesthetic.
Treats: early to moderate gum disease.
Surgical Care
Periodontal Surgery and Grafting
When pockets are too deep for a deep clean to resolve, periodontal surgery lifts the gum, cleans the root and bone properly, and repositions the gum to fit closely again.
Where recession has exposed roots or infection has destroyed bone, grafting rebuilds what has been lost. That also prepares a site for an implant where a tooth cannot be saved.
Treats: moderate to advanced periodontitis.

What Does Gum Disease Treatment Cost?
It depends entirely on the stage. A deep clean costs a fraction of surgical treatment, which is the strongest argument for coming in early.
What affects the price:
- How advanced the gum disease is
- How much of the mouth needs treating, since deep cleaning is priced per quadrant
- Whether surgery or grafting is needed, priced per area or per tooth
- Whether any teeth need other treatment first

Does Insurance Cover It?
Usually, at least in part. Most dental insurance treats gum disease as necessary rather than cosmetic, so plans generally contribute, often substantially for deep cleaning. We’ll check your specific plan and tell you where you stand.

Gingivitis, the early stage, can be fully reversed. Periodontitis can’t be reversed, because lost bone doesn’t grow back, but it can be stopped and managed. That’s why catching it early matters.
